2012
PROJECT
Design residency
THE CHALLENGE
I was selected to take part in the 2012 Geeks in Residence; a government funded prototyping and innovation programme for Scotlands cultural sector, the project paired technologists with cultural organisations to explore the creative application of technology.
I was paired with Stills, the Edinburgh based contemporary photography gallery and learning center.
Established in 1977, Stills has a long history of supporting the advancement, enjoyment, exploration and understanding of photography in Scotland.
Time
Man Ray, Cornel Lucas, Richard Learoyd, David Goldblatt and Walker Evans are just a few of the highly revered photographers who have had work exhibited by Stills over the years. Subsequently there is an amazing archive of historic exhibition posters.
Visualising history
I explored representing this rich artistic history through a digital visual timeline, iterating through various interface methodoligies.
Space
Based in Edinburgh's historic other worldly old town, the gallery occupies No.23 Cockburn St. It is spread over five floors, two public, with polished textured screed floor and white walls
Visualising space
The gallery building is a labyrinth of intriguing creative spaces such as dark rooms, editing suites, and a well stocked library. I explored methods to digitally visualise the spaces within Stills, so that people can see how much goes on there โ over and above the gallery.
